Grizzly Giant Tour - The Surviving Tunnel Tree (Stop 4) (U.S. National Park Service).

  The California Tunnel Tree was cut in to allow horsedrawn stages to pass through. Most visitors don't know that two trees in this grove. The iconic tree was one of just a few tunneled-through sequoias in California. The most famous was the Wawona Tree, in Yosemite National Park;.

The tunnel allowed tourists to drive, bike, or walk through the tree. The tunneling inflicted severe damage to the health and strength of the trees. The tunnels were cut to stimulate automobile tourism. Because of the damaging effects of carving through trees, the practice of creating tunnel trees has long passed. Jump to content Navigation. Tuolumne Grove Tree. This trail descends slowly through thick forest along an old road now closed to vehicles to a small grove of giant sequoia, which include a former drive-through tree, now deceased. Length: 1. Download a Mariposa Grove map here. The one-mile trail from the shuttle stop at the lower grove to the Grizzly Giant and the California Tunnel Tree makes a great trip for families with children. In winter , the visitors center at the Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza closes and the sequoia grove offers no formal services. However, you can park at the start of the Mariposa Grove Road and cross country ski or snowshoe in to see the giant sequoias. Snowshoers will love the Washburn Trail which winds through the forest, but especially once a snowshoe track is established, cross country skiers might find that trail too narrow and winding and could prefer to ski up the Mariposa Grove Road instead.
